This is a variation of a traditional Soviet dish, originally served on high holidays, like New Year's and Old New Year's (yes, it is a thing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_New_Year). Having relocated to places with better food options, this dish became more of a commonplace appetizer. A mix of boiled chopped vegetables, with sliced pickles sounds weird, but I'd give it a try if I were you. Important note: this dish is better the next day, so try to prepare it the day before or at least, a couple of hours before serving!
