black-eyed-peas
This recipe takes me back to my childhood. Put this with some cornbread and you have a hearty meal. Add it on top of some rice and you will know that you have “dined sufficiently” as my mom’s brother, my Uncle Jess, would often say after eating a great meal. My Mom was an amazing cook and I started cooking my black-eyed peas the exact same way she cooked her black-eyed peas: with smoked ham hocks/shanks. But I started substituting smoked turkey once I married My Baby because many of her family members don’t eat pork. The things you do for love! The good news is smoked turkey has a crazy good flavor profile and matches well with black-eyed peas. So, whether you use smoked ham or turkey, you’ll get a delicious flavor per bite!!
