fruit-chaat
Ahhh, fruit chaat, the quintessential iftar item in Pakistani homes. I have to admit, I didn't grow up eating this, but I do remember the first time I had it. Mami-jaan made it for one iftar, and I just loved it. When I got married, I made it one day and it felt like such a big production. I still recall just how nervous I was, a new cook, genuinely intimidated by this. After all, I'd be serving it to my husband, my in-laws, I felt the pressure! To make things worse, Mami-jaan had absolutely no measurements...and as you can see from my recipe, I'm not much better. Bear with me - I'll try to get the final measurements this year (Ramadan 2025) iA! You can add whichever fruits you like - these are just my preferred selection. Mangoes, guava and pomegranate are extremely rare. One good thing about the long summer fasts was that I always had Pakistani mangoes on hand - levels up the fruit chaat to the Nth degree. Our standard fruit chaat consists of oranges, apples, pears and grapes - I won't do without these four, everything else is just a bonus.
